Diwali or Deepavali is an Indian Hindu festival celebrated all over India. It is known as the festival of lights. Diwali is also celebrated in countries Fiji, Malaysia, Nepal, Suriname, Trinidad, Myanmar, Guyana, Mauritius etc. The day of Diwali is a public holiday in the above countries. The word 'Diwali' means a ' row of lamps' in Sanskrit language. Rangoli design are also made in the front of houses.

In southern parts of India Diwali is a one day festival whereas in the northern parts of India it is celebrated for a week. People celebrate Diwali by wearing new clothes, offering sweets, lighting fire works etc. Also on the day of Diwali, people clean their houses, go to nearby temple to seek blessings, decorate homes with diyas or lamps, distribute sweets etc.
There are lot of beliefs regarding the origin of celebration of Diwali. One such belief is that Diwali is the celebration of return of Rama, Sita and Lakshmana after defeating Ravana. There is also a belief that Diwali is the celebration of return of Pandavas after completing 12 years of vanavaasa. Another belief is that, Diwali is the celebration of marriage of Godess Lakshmi with Lord Vishnu.
