Diwali is the festival of lights. Diwali is an important festival in many south Asian countries. On the day of Diwali people light 'diyas' or earthen oil lamps around their house. On the day of Diwali people buy new clothes, makes sweets, light crackers, make special dishes and celebrate with their families.
The word 'Diwali' or 'Deepavali', means a series of lamps. It is believed that diwali is celebrated as the reminder of the return of Lord Rama to Ayodhya after victory over Ravana. People clean their homes, invite guests, offer gifts and sweets to one another on the eve of Diwali.
The legend associated with diwali is different in different regions. The legend in South India is different from legend in North India. In Nepal it may not be the one same as in India or in any other Asian country.
