It was Sardar Patel who played significant role in the unifying 562 princely states to one country, the Republic of India. For the same reason, Sardar Patel is also known as the 'Man of Unity' in India. In order to commemorate the efforts of Sardar Patel in building a unified India, the statue was named 'The Satue of Unity'.
The statue of unity has a height of 182 meters.
It was unveiled by the then Prime Minister of India, Narendra Modi on October 31, 2018. October 31 is the birth anniversary of Sardar Vallabhai Patel. The Statue of Unity was a dream project of Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi.
The statue of Iron Man of India is also made with iron. It took 5700 metric tonnes of steel to complete the Statue of Unity.
The iron used for building the statue was collected through 'Loha' campaign. A campaign through which used iron was collected from the farmers across the country, and was remolded to build the structure.
