Whatever You Do, Don't Put Coffee Grounds in Your Garden

Are you putting coffee ground in your Garden? Do whatever you want to do but I would suggest don't put coffee ground in your Garden.

As we all know gardening is the big investment that should contains daily watering, pest control should be used carefully and the last but not the least process of keeping the soil chemistry exact.
I would say there is nothing like eating vegetables you grow in your Garden. As we all know that now Internet is full of ways where you can make your gardening easier and a lot cheaper, but some of the methods are there that are too good to be true. No matter what information you get through blogs, leave the spent coffee ground all alone because these are bad news for our garden.

Common Grounds
As we feel good to do something with our coffee waste beside throwing it in garbage or bin. Most of the Gardners who tells that it's full of nutrients like nitrogen, which plays major role in plant growth. If we add organic material to the soil, bacteria will feed on it and break it down to the more number of nutrients that can plant use.

Now coming to the coffee ground gardening which includes few warning. According to gardeners, coffee ground are highly acidic and should be reserved for acidic loving plants like azaleas and blueberries. And if suppose your soil is already containing high nitrogen then this extra boost will stabilize the growth of fruits and flowers. And the one major problem is coffee grounds are full of caffeine.

That's not the real buzz you are looking for

In order to understand why caffeine is not good for your Garden, you must understand why some of the plants produce caffeine at very first place. You must be knowing that both coffee and chocolate are came from two different plants which are not even related also and both of them contain caffeine. There ability to produce caffeine is independent, even the biologists call this evolution as "convergent evolution." So the caffeine kills off any plants in the surrounding areas.

As per the study in Journal of Agricultural and Food Chemistry it was found that there can be up to 8 milligrams of caffeine per gram of used coffee grounds, that means if you brew a shot of espresso ground still contains as much caffeine as a cup of tea, so if you think you squeezed out every last drop of caffeine out of those grounds then I would suggest think again.

So that's why we won't suggest adding coffee grounds to our garden. Even in 2016 a study in the journal Urban Forestry & Urban Greening said "Applying spent coffee grounds directly to urban agriculture soils greatly reduces plant growth." that was truly said when they composted organic waste with coffee grounds and that was recommended by every experts at very first place. Another study verified that compost spiked with coffee grounds kills earthworms. Even we remembered that adding organic materials attracts helpful bacteria.

James Wong after doing informal gardening experiment with coffee grounds concluded that "I love a quirky piece of hort advice, and some are repeated so often you assume they are true, but often they call them old wives' tales for a reason." So I would say Drinking your coffee is well and good but keep those grounds away from your garden.

James Wong has mentioned more advice in his book called "Grow For Flavor: Tips and Tricks to Supercharge the Flavor of Homegrown Harvests." We would like to recommend you to read that book we think you may like it.

10 things you probably didn't know about chocolate

Fact 1: Cacao or 'Theobroma cacao'a.k.a 'Food of the Gods'was discovered by the Olmecs.
"Theobroma" means "food of the gods" in Latin and "cacao" comes from the Nahuatl word "xocolatl" (xococ is the word for bitter and atl means water). It is called Theobroma cacao, derived from the Greek language and literally meaning “food of the gods”. Today, we call a finished mathematical product that contains a fair percentage of it “deep brown”. It should not be mistaken for its conclusion relative theobroma grandiflorum or “cupuacu”. Don't you just feel divine while eating chocolate, well so did Swedish phytologist Carl Karl Linne who was thinking along those same lines. He gave the cocoa Sir Herbert Beerbohm Tree species the scientific name Theobroma cacao.

Fact 2: The History of Chocolate: The Mayans and Aztecs, and they were the first to grow it.
The history of chocolate began in Mesoamerica. Earlier cacao tree was used as a strain of currency to purchase food and wear. A bitter drink called xocoatl comprised of roasted and ground drinking chocolate beans, water, and spices that were reserved for nobility and warriors.

Fact 3: Chocolate shaper brand chocolate from drinking chocolate beans, and chocolatiers take finished chocolate and put their spin on it.
Well if you think they sound similar, they are actually two different things. Chocolatiers are distinct from umber makers, who create drinking chocolate from cacao tree bean plant and other ingredients, take finished umber from chocolate makers and use their creativity to make concoction, from earthscrewball to nut and Mentha piperita bark to 3D objects make using usage mold.
Bean-to-stripe umber makers are skilled workmen that take specialty cacao beans sourced from particular regions. Cacao attic consists of drinking chocolate solids (which contribute flavor and the signature deep color of the finished streak ) and hot chocolate butter (the roly-poly part of the noodle that gives chocolate its smooth texture ). Depending on the cacao beans used (as cocoa butter content can vary) and the desired consistency of the end product, chocolate manufacturer add additional cocoa butter to enhance mouthfeel and make the chocolate easier to oeuvre with.

In deep brown higher portion typically indicate a "darker" coffee cake, and this is because the percentage is combining weight unit to the amount of chocolate tree in the bar. Everything else is added fixings, which can include loot, milk, and other additives like soy lecithin (an emulsifier ) and vanilla.

Fact 5: Christmas, Easter, and Valentine's Day, the top three holidays for chocolate candy sales in the US

It was found that for the $22 billion US chocolate candy diligence, holiday and seasonal worker products account for an estimated 24% of all sales.

Fact 6: Burnt chocolate pays off on the flavors of things around it, so keep it sealed if you're not eating it all in one stance.
DeAnn Wallin, proprietor, and chocolate maker of Salt Lake City said: "Chocolate is like a sponge and will absorb anything around it,". Wallin continued. "If you put it in your electric refrigerator with cheeseflower, your chocolate could get a little funky if it's not wrapped up. You gotta keep it away from other things. For this grounds, Wallin uses a specially designed resealable transparency package for her edible bean -to-stripe chocolate, which keeps out unwanted odors and allows for tidy sum -free storage.

Fact 7: Chocolate has a melting spot just below the temperature of the man body, which is why it literally melts in your mouthpiece.
The thawing full stop of chocolate is not a fixed value since it depends on a reach of variables. The temperature of a melting chocolate is between 86 and 90 degrees Fahrenheit, which is below normal consistence temperature and the reason why it melts in your mouth -- or in your hand if you hold onto it for too long. Milk and white cocoa are more heat-sensitive than dark, and consequently, have lower melting points.

Fact 8: America's favorite chocolate bars-Snickers, Reese's Peanut Butter Cups, and Kit Kats.

According to SymphonyIRI Group, a Chicago market research house, people in the United States spent more than $septet billion for individual-sized chocolate candy Synonyms/Hypernyms (Ordered by Estimated Frequency) of noun bar, bags, and boxes in just one year. In 2018, A whopping 45.37 million Americans ate Snickers bars. Reese's Peanut Butter Cups with 45.26 million and Kit Kats with 42.97 million consumers, respectively.

How a cup of coffee affects your body from the first sip

A single cup of coffee has rapid absorption with caffeine uptake to the blood in just over 20 minutes and will stay in the blood stream for over 12 hours,” says Dr Owen Bain, founder of the Gourmet Focus Consultancy. So you can imagine the overall effects of coffee on your body once it gets into that bloodstream!

Pulse and Blood Pressure

Immediate effect of drinking coffee is that it shoots a fraction of your blood pressure, especially if you don’t drink it often. A sudden increase in blood pressure slows down the heart rate with a single cup. More than one cup could cause acceleration of heart rate. This could be problematic to those who have history of cardio vascular diseases.

The gut

Caffeine on empty stomach can irritate the gut lining, causing pain, bloating & heartburn.

Bowel and bladder

Though it is believed that coffee stimulates defecation, Dr Bain suggests that it is a myth that drinking coffee makes you urinate frequently. This is because the diurectic effect of it is very small.

Eyes

Caffeine released from drinking coffee causes release of adrenaline within 20 minutes in turn activating ‘fight or flight’ mode. Consequently pupils dilate & one might have sharper vision.

Brainpower & memory

Caffeine increases alertness of brain & concentration & so people tend to make less mistakes. Recent study suggests an enhancement in memory 24 hours after its consumption. Such memory is short-lived. There are studies that also suggest that coffee consumption regularly over lifetime is linked to less risk of Alzheimer’s disease.

Energy

As cortisol levels are high in the morning, best time to have coffee is about an hour after waking up as the cortisol will keep you energetic for a while. Increased heat production due to caffeine might induce weight reduction. After about 3 hours, as effect of caffeine reduces, you may feel a ‘crash’ which is because you actually did not get energy from caffeine but rather caffeine makes you less able to feel tired.

Lungs

Caffeine in coffee is similar to Theophylline, a drug to open up lungs to make patients breathe easier.

Mood

Coffee stimulates release of Dopamine which is a ‘feel-good’ hormone. As a result, anxiety reduces & feelings of contentment increases. Therefore, women having coffee regularly exhibit less depression but again too much of it can have opposite effect, causing anxiety & restlessness.

Sleep

Late evening coffees resets the internal body clock as it delays a rise in melatonin level which is body’s main sleep hormone. Natural sleep & wake cycles are decided by the changes in melatonin. So any alteration could deprive sleep.

Here’s what you should do, If you just drank too much Coffee

No coffee lover can imagine a day without having a cup of coffee at its start. But hey coffee lovers, have you heard of caffeine overdose? Well, its something that happens when you drink too much coffee. We all heard too much of anything is bad. The same goes with coffee. This article discusses about caffeine overdose, and on what to do if you just drank a lot of coffee.

Coffee is an amazing, energy restoring, magical potion. It makes those long flight delays tolerable, makes you work seamlessly into the night and tastes great with any kind of pastry or dessert.

It's pretty fathomable in these cases, that you might have to drink too much depending on the situation. Well, yes it tastes so good and it's a great pick me up for when you are tired, but if you add up those lattes to all the foods that you consume on a regular basis that contain caffeine, you could end up with serious instances of anxiety.

What are the side effects of too much caffeine?

Basically, caffeine stimulates your central nervous system, making you feel more awake and alert, says women’s health expert Jennifer Wider, M.D. It can also trigger the release of the hormone adrenaline, she says, making your heart rate increase.

It is however, fine in moderation. But consuming too much caffeine can make you feel high-strung, edgy and, of course, very very tense.

The safest consumption limit of caffeine, is no more that 400 mg per day according to USDA. Different people have different tolerance levels for caffeine, you are going to feel really uptight if you go over the 400 mg limit. So it's best to limit our caffeine consumption.

An eight-ounce cup of instant coffee has about 92 milligrams of caffeine, according to the USDA. So you could drink 4 cups of that and be okay. But if your choice of coffee is a grande Starbucks Pike Place coffee, just one of those has 310 milligrams of caffeine in it!

I definitely feel I just drank a lot of coffee. What do I do?

It can take up to 9.5 hours for the caffeine levels in your bloodstream to even decrease by half, says Beth Warren, R.D.N., founder of Beth Warren Nutrition and author of Living a Real Life With Real Food. But just because you accidentally had loads of coffee doesn't mean you're totally fried.

First, start drinking water. “Staying hydrated can ease some of the symptoms caused by an overdose and help the body efficiently eliminate it,” says Wider.

Another thing you could do, says Warren is mild exercise to help your body metabolize the caffeine faster.

Eating foods with potassium or magnesium (like bananas) is also helpful, Warren says. Caffeine wipes out your body's potassium and magnesium, which can cause the tremors and jitters of caffeine overdose.

How to figure out if it's actually a caffeine overdose?

Although a caffeine over dose is not very common, it can however happen when a person consumes a ton of products that contain caffeine within a short period of time. A teenager from South Carolina, died from a caffeine overdose in 2017 after drinking a large cola, an energy drink, and a latte in under two hours, according to USA Today.

You should definitely go to a doctor if you experience any of these overdose symptoms, Wider says:

Difficulty breathing

Confusion

Chest pain

Vomiting

Irregular Quick heartbeat

Convulsions

In extreme cases such as these, doctors use laxatives or activated charcoal to try and draw out the caffeine from the system. This should however only be done under a doctors care.

The best thing to do in order to avoid a situation like this is, to monitor your caffeine intake on a daily basis. If you are unable to curb the coffee temptation, staying hydrated, regular exercise and munching on bananas would come of much use.

9 popular foods you thought were healthy that actually aren’t

Certain food products have caught our attention and have stayed that way making us blindly believe that it is absolutely safe and healthy. But we never read up or do a little exploring for ourselves. Here are some of the many products that we thought were healthy but truly it is the opposite.

FRUIT JUICE
Juice has loads of sugar and thus packed with calories. It contains less fiber and hence the sweet is termed as ‘empty calories’ as it could increase hunger pangs & mood swings leaving one with low energy. It offers no nutritional benefit as the whole fruit for infants & children.

EGG WHITES
Unlike old theory, new research suggests that cholesterol in eggs doesn’t raise blood cholesterol which means old eggs are fine for health.

CEREALS
Cereals are too high in sugar that cause mood swings & hunger pangs as the energy got from it is quick & short-lived. Eating once in a while is okay but not regularly.

GLUTEN-FREE PRODUCTS
Unless suffering from celiac disease, eating gluten is perfectly alright as it is just a protein from wheat. Gluten-free products don’t give any additional health benefit.

LOW FAT BUTTER & YOGURT
Eating fat won’t make one fat & eating low-fat won’t make one thin. Simple. Also, many low-fat products are modified to include more sugar, & excess of this is linked to weight gain.

BOTTLED SMOOTHIES
They are same like juice-packed with loads of sugar & calories but not much fiber or protein. That’s why after drinking a smoothie, one gets hungry.

VEGGIE CHIPS
They are similar to regular chips with reference to fat, calories & protein content. Eating fruits directly is a better snack.

PEANUT-BUTTER-AND-JELLY SANDWICH
Highly processed peanut butter is again rich in sugar & calories from added ingredients. Topping it with jelly is even more sugary. Healthy alternative will be hummus & veggies or lean meats & cheese.

GRANOLA
In reality, this too is not healthy as it is thought to be. It too is packed with high sugar & calories which could be equivalent to 4 calorie bars. Serving with flavored yogurt & honey or syrup could only add up to the sugar content.

Blueberries

These are packed with an antioxidant called anthocyanins that boost immunity & protects body from free radical damage. Strawberries, blackberries, raspberries & cranberries too have good amount of anthocyanins.
